Spend two Saturday afternoons at the Glendora Museum where we will look at local examples of historical patchwork quilts and learn about traditional patterns. You will then gain understanding of how they were made by making your own patchwork block which you will turn into a keepsake. Or use your block as a starter for a larger project.
What is English paper piecing? It is a method of sewing fabric shapes together to create larger patchwork surfaces of cloth often used for quilting. By using templates cut from paper, this technique allows you to create and sew patterns and shapes to a fine accuracy. This is a hand sewn technique so it is portable, easy to learn and doesn't require fancy or expensive equipment.
We will learn to make hexagonal shapes for our patchwork project.
What do I need to bring? We will supply the equipment, materials and know-how. Fabrics will also be supplied.
Want to bring your own fabric anyway? We recommend 100% cotton fabric that has been washed, dried and ironed.
Optional items we will not supply:
- Eyewear that will allow you to see fine details
- Thimbles
- If you have special needles, scissors or other sewing equipment you prefer to use you can bring them along.
About the Instructor: Connie Rothstein is a longtime resident of Glendora who has been making quilts for over 40 years. She has developed her own unique take on English paper piecing specializing in hexagonals for traditional quilting patterns as well as her own original designs. Rothstein is also a photo historian and retired educator. She uses her knowledge and skills to share her passion for patchwork quilting with people of all ages.
