Donkey Skin, also known by the original French Peau d'Ane, is Jacques Demy's 1970 surrealist classic musical fantasy comedy based on the 17th century fairy tale by Charles Perrault. Catherine Deneuve stars as the Princess whose father, the King, seeks her hand in marriage after promising his dying wife to only wed a woman more beautiful than she. Listening to her godmother, the Fairy of Lilacs, the Princess flees to a neighboring farm and hides as a scullery maid, while wearing the skin of her father's prized donkey as a disguise. Ahead of its time and strikingly modern in its design, this warts and all fairytale is a much beloved film in France.
What should I bring?
Rubel Castle is a monumental folk architecture site nestled in the foothills of Glendora. It was built by hand by Michael Rubel and his "pharmhands" over several decades. Its stone masonry was handcrafted from river rock, recycled materials and an assemblage of the relics and artifacts of Glendora's early agricultural and industrial eras. Michael's innovative use of both natural and cultural materials makes Rubel Castle an exceptionally important masterwork within the context of folk art environments in California. It also serves as a rare resource and physical reminder of the citrus industry, which played a significant role in the development of the area in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. Rubel Castle is under the stewardship of the Glendora Historical Society and is open for guided tours by appointment only.
