This photographic plate from the 100-inch telescope on Mt. Wilson shows the first variable stardiscovered outside the Milky Way.Although Hubble published NGC6822 & M33 first, it was this plate of M31 that set the ball rolling on confirming that spiral nebulae were actually extragalactic stellar systems. Commonly called “island universes,” we now call them spiral galaxies.
Please join us at the Bidwell Forum as Timothy Thompson introduces the significant part played by Mount Wilson Observatory, and Edwin Hubble, in the creation of the new science of observational cosmology, in the early years of the 20th century.
